On August 10, 2026, the Centre for Rural Development in Central Vietnam (CRD) and experts from FocusGroupGO Vietnam Company Limited (FGGO) conducted a field survey in Bo Trach and Tuyen Hoa communes, Quang Tri province. The objective was to collect data to implement the project: “Linking farms to improve beef value chain governance” in the locality, funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR).
Participants in the field activity included experts from FGGO Vietnam, Professor Oleg Nicotic and Ms. Le Thi Hang Nga, as well as representatives from CRD, including Vice Director Ho Le Phi Khanh and volunteer Tran Duc Minh. During this field activity, the delegation worked with representatives from Doan Ket Phu Quy Company and Le Dung Linh Company, as well as representatives of the Lien Hoa Village Cooperative. The aim was to evaluate purchasing models, verify imported livestock sources, assess the feasibility of the Cooperative model and subsequently build a business model suited to local realities.
During the meeting, FGGO experts conducted surveys and asked questions about the companies’ current business operations, herd size, green fodder availability, and linkages with local cooperatives. This was done to evaluate the business situation and the project’s implementation potential, connecting locally available green fodder sources with enterprises to reduce input costs for businesses while supporting farmers’ livelihoods. Additionally, the survey team interviewed representatives from the Lien Hoa Village Cooperative to cross-check information, ensuring the objectivity of the collected data.
Speaking at the meeting with the Lien Hoa Cooperative representative, Mr. Nguyen Van Lam – head of the cooperative – stated: “The cooperative has currently signed cooperation contracts with local businesses and holds immense potential for development. Currently, there are about 20 hectares of biomass corn land dedicated to supplying businesses, which can be expanded to 30 hectares to meet growing demand. Furthermore, the product price growth from 1,200 VND/kg in 2024 up to 1,500 VND/kg as of 2026, along with support from local authorities, serves as a positive sign that helps improve the livelihoods of local residents.”
Despite such potential, several shortcomings and difficulties remain to be resolved. Ms. Nguyen Thi Doan Phuong – representative of Le Dung Linh Company – shared: “Although we previously collaborated, differing harvest times among households within the cooperative led to inconsistencies in quality. This creates difficulties for the business due to unassured input quality, resulting in a majority of the current supply having to rely on traders from other areas such as Nghe An province.” Furthermore, price squeezing by intermediaries, such as local merchants and drivers, causes severe financial losses for local farmers and remains a pressing issue.
The field trip achieved its set goals. The gathered information serves as important data to outline a business model research framework (Model 3 – Large-Scale Commercial Cattle Fattening Facility) tailored to local conditions, aiming to improve the quality of life for the people here.
