ANNUAL REPORT 2023

First of all, I would like to send our warm greetings to our donors, partners, and all of the readers!

The global picture of 2023 was defined by polycrises —depicted by the brutality of wars, the lingering aftermath of COVID-19, food insecurity, economic downturn and inflation, as well as climate change reaching alarm levels worldwide. This forced numerous countries to deal with severe impacts, with developing nations suffering the most. Vietnam has also faced significant challenges in responding to these crises, particularly as the increasingly complex and unpredictable nature of natural disasters continues to adversely affect people’s lives, especially vulnerable communities.

Amidst these multifaceted challenges in 2023, the Centre for Rural Development in Central Vietnam (CRD) collaborated closely with domestic and international civil society organizations, as well as local partners, to continue delivering solutions that empower communities to cope with these issues. The Centre successfully implemented 10 projects across 9 provinces and cities, focusing on three core fields:

  1. Sustainable livelihood development.
  2. Natural resource governance and biodiversity conservation.
  3. Climate change adaptation and disaster risk management.

These projects achieved numerous positive outcomes, contributing to the improvement of vulnerable group’s livelihoods including the poverty, ethnic minorities, women, and children.

In 2023, CRD’s projects recorded a number of outstanding accomplishments. Climate-resilient livelihood models—such as pig and cattle farming, earthworm farming, rice cultivation, and the growing of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) under natural forest canopies—helped boost local incomes and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The capacity of communities, particularly ethnic minority groups in forest management, protection and development has steadily enhanced, leading to better protection of forest areas allocated to community management. Native forestry species and NTFPs were conserved and expanded, contributing to forest enrichment. Community awareness regarding emission reduction, climate change mitigation was enhanced through training sessions and communication campaigns. Furthermore, best practices in preventing gender-based violence—specifically addressing gender identity and gender expression regarding children—were actively promoted, cotributing the effectiveness of local child protection efforts in Vietnam.

CRD extends its sincere gratitude to our donors, government management agencies, partner organizations, colleagues, beneficiary communities and especially CRD’s dedicated staff for their trust and companionship in achieving these remarkable results. We look forward to your continued partnership to make even greater contributions to the community and society in the coming year.

Sincerely,

Director of CRD

Truong Quang Hoang
