On August 12, 2021, the Centre for Rural Development in Central Vietnam (CRD) in cooperation with the Community Forest Management Board and the Youth Union of Doi hamlet organized a dissemination session of the Convention on forest management, protection and development for over 40 ethnic minority children in the community.

Warm-up activities about child rights

The communication session aimed to disseminate the Convention on forest management, protection and development of Doi hamlet which was approved by the People’s Committee of Nam Dong district according to Decision No. 827/QD-UBND dated July 23, 2021. People in Doi hamlet have voluntarily developed the Convention and committed to comply with policies and guidelines of the Party and the State Law and regulations on community forest management and promote good local practices and customs in forest management, protection and development.

In order to help children in the hamlet understand more about the Convention and raise their awareness about forest management and development, the Centre for Rural Development in Central Vietnam along with the Community Forest Management Board and the Youth Union of Doi hamlet organized a dissemination session on “the Convention on forest management, protection and development and children”. Over 40 ethnic minority children between the ages of 8 and 14 participated in the communication session.

In the session, representative of the Community Forest Management Board of the hamlet shared several measures mentioned in the Convention that children can do to protect forests such as prohibiting the lighting of fires in forests, reporting unattended fires, not grazing livestock in young forest, no trapping wildlife, etc. Vivid pictures and interactive games have effectively delivered messages about forest protection to children.

At the end of the communication session, Mr. Tran Van Xuan, Head of Doi hamlet Community Forest Management Board shared: “This session is meaningful to children and people in Doi hamlet, which has greatly promoted the potential and strength of community in forest management, protection and development.”

The activity was within the project “Strengthening the capacity of civil society organizations on child rights governance” coordinated by CRD and funded by Save the Children in Vietnam.
